The History Of The Event
In honor of the beloved therapy dogs Spencer and Penny, hundreds of golden retrievers and their owners have gathered in Boston for the past two years to celebrate the dogs' legacy and support canine cancer research. Spencer, who was named the official dog of the Boston Marathon in 2022, became a local icon for cheering on runners with "Boston Strong" flags starting in 2015. Following the passing of both Spencer and his niece Penny from cancer in early 2023, the MA Golden Meetups organized the "Golden Strong" walk at Boston Common. These meetups allow participants to meet marathon runners and raise funds for the Morris Animal Foundation, continuing the dogs' mission of bringing joy and overcoming obstacles.
